Paper 4 Question 2

Language does directly shape our thoughts. Different countries and cultures speak English uniquely. This adds to the ‘melting pot’ of the English language. The background of each form of the English language is what forms our thoughts and how we think. We are all born into different cultures, and we live with different people and social groups surrounding us. This is exactly what shapes our language and thoughts.  When referring to our ‘sense of self’, we are not born with it. It includes a set of values and behaviors which we display throughout our lives. It is in our early childhood development when we begin to discover our sense of self. The Stanford researcher Lera Boroditsky mentions the importance of “space, time (and) gender”. These are just a few of the key features that are found in discovering our ‘sense of self’. Swiss Psychologist Jean Piaget conducted his research on childhood development. His research remains significant because it highlighted the concept o...

Paper 4 Section 1

The English language is viewed as a global or world language. In the 21st century English plays a vital role in world communications. English is actually spoken on all five continents, unlike most other languages. With all of this being said, China is the country that “boasts the most English speakers.” Countries like China raise the threat of the dominance of English in the 21st century being challenged, as they are a non-native English speaking region that is gaining economic and political power.  China has established their citizens' use of multilingualism, as they speak both Chinese and English in their daily lives. In fact, 350 million people in China have “some knowledge” of the English language. Moreover, multilingualism continues to prove that there is a close link between language and power. This theory was put into place by David Crystal. He believes that English is so widely used due to the people who speak it. China is known as a world power that does value Engli...

More specifically, the purpose of this piece is to give advice to its audience. Who, in this case, is a stranger. The purpose is made clear from the first paragraph by stating, “I would like to help you.” This same sentence also portrays the points of views used in the letter. Most of his sentences are run-on sentences, as he is allowing his th...

Paper 1 Question 1

1a) Taylor Drott 423 Spinnaker Drive Marco Island, 34145 4/19/2022 President Emmaneul Macron 748 Royalty Lane Paris, 25845 Dear President Macron, I write to you today in concern of the Amazon rainforest. Over the past three weeks the rainforest has been fled with horrific forest fires. These fires pose a threat to our precious rainforest, and there has been a lack of effort to raise awareness towards this threat. A change needs to be made. As you may recall, a fire stumbled through the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris earlier this year. Within just three minutes of the first flame donations were made. Billions of dollars were raised for the cathedral. This raises the question of why awareness was raised then and not now. The Amazon rainforest provides valuable resources for our survival. It produces 20% of the oxygen in the earth’s atmosphere and it contributes to the slow of global warming. It is a vital piece in our lives. More recently, the Amazon rainforest has had 73,000 fo...

Paper 3 Section B

The dialogue being analyzed is between a mother and her five year old daughter Raina. In it, Raina and her mother are discussing the countryside and Raina is discovering more about her surrounding environment. With Raina being five years old, she is a part of the post-telegraphic stage. Raina’s developmental signs also fall under this category. Raina shows that she is able to maintain a conversation with her mother using more than one simple idea. Along with language development, Raina shows additional signs of cognitive and social development. This all shows that Raina is more pragmatic in every situation she is in.       Initially, Raina displays great turn-taking skills with her mother. This can be difficult for children, as they are forced to listen while the other speaks. Raina did indeed do this, until the end of the conversation. Overlapping actually occurred a few times by both Raina and her mother. Sometimes overlapping can be a sign of distress or ...

Paper 3 Question 1

Text A is formatted as a letter from an uncle to his nephew. It was written in 1832, which makes the letter a part of the later modern English era. The late modern English era ranges from 1800 to present day. Because of how broad this time period is, there are obvious changes within it. The letter was written very early on in this era, so comparing it and recognizing the differences between then and present day is necessary.       Text A had various semantic changes present. Technology has been the root of many forms of language change. Over time technology and hydraulics have forced the English language to adapt with it. In Text A the word “venture” is used. This word fits the time period of the early 1800’s very well, as it holds a lot of formality. These words aren't used in the present day because of Aitchison’s descriptive approach. This approach stated that there is no fixed standard in English. The English language evolves as its users do. ...

Paper 2 Section B: The Forest

The Forest My car moved at a constant speed down the backroad for hours, but once I approached the fifth hour my tires slowed. I didn’t know what was happening, so I pulled to the side of the road. Once I pulled over I looked ahead and all I could see was the hills that the road created in the distance. The road had dark shadows from the giant trees painted across it. The trees on either side of the road created, what looked like, an infinite forest. I was intrigued by this forest, so I carefully stepped out of my car onto patches of grass that led towards the forest.  As I approach the forest the wind startles me. A cool breeze crept up my back and caused a shiver to run down my spine. The wind continued on and ran through the forest. I suddenly noticed small dots of water appearing on my arms. A light drizzle began, and paired with the wind it was a bit chilly. The weather had created a cold and abrupt atmosphere.  I continued on to the forest itself. The most e...
